The first few weeks when a child is settling into an early years setting is a time of crucial importance to their later happiness in the setting. All children are individuals and while some children will adjust fairly easily to the new environment and new routines, others will take longer to feel comfortable and secure. Sometimes we can overestimate a young child’s ability to cope with transitions and settle in and happily substitute a group of unfamiliar adults and children for their parents or main care giver. The lure of the toys doesn’t always compensate! The experience can be overwhelming for some young children especially if they have not had experience of another form of care outside of the family.
While there are no quick fixes for ensuring a smooth transition, Horizon Kids Nursery has some handy tips which you can use to support your child to confidently settle in their first weeks.
Horizon Kids British Nursery School in Dubai, offers the British Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum. The curriculum is delivered by qualified Early Years teachers, supported by trained teaching assistants, class room assistants, nurses and housekeepers.
Horizon Kids British Nursery is passionate about quality provision in the early years. It recognises that children grow and develop at different rates and supports each child based on their individual needs and requirements.
TIPS
  • Be confident yourself – Talk about the positive aspects of the new place. Ensure them that the place they visit will be a lot of fun.
  • Keep goodbyes brief – It can be tempting for parents to drag out the farewell, but experts suggest to just walk away. It is helpful to your child to and helps them settle easily.
  • Assure them of your arrival – Let your child know and be confident that you will always come back. This is why we feel it is important to always say goodbye and see you soon.
  • Allow them to take their time – If your child cries every time you drop them off at nursery, it’s natural to feel guilty. Some children take a little longer to settle into while others start enjoying all the different activities on offer.
